NGO:
ICA - Mogi Mirim Institute for Incentives to Children and Teenagers
Project:
Asas. Todo ser humano motivado, voa! (Wings. Every motivated human being can fly!)

The Organization

ICA was founded in 1997 to welcome children with more than 10 years old. At the beginning, their services were rendered through school support programs, recreational activities and medical services by volunteers.

As the NGO grew up, artistic and recreational activities started to be developed, providing a space not existent before in the city, thanks to the new educational full development alternative.

In 2002, a transformation gave rise to a new institutional dimension to ICA, which had been a space designed for the educational and professional qualification driven by the appreciation of human beings by prompting their self-knowledge, self-esteem, critical judgment and more conscious decisions, based on the certainty that potential individual transformations lie in the capacity of people to learn their roles as makers of their own reality and history.

The Project

The Asas project is based on 3 pillars of the society:

a) The public sector, in the creation of a City Council for People with Disabilities in Mogi Mirim;
b) The private sector, concerning the provision of advisory services for companies to conform, hire and include people with disabilities available on the labor market;
c) The civilian society, concerning the offer of professional qualification to people with disabilities, and all their actions are targeted at fostering equal opportunities and conditions, thus building up a better society for everyone -- the inclusive society.

For two years this proposal will spread out local actions developed in other regional cities, multiplying the methods and strategies applied to each pillar -- public sector, private sector and civilian society.

Target Group

Project:
Tribos da Paz (Peace Tribes)

The Organization

Organization Description: The Não-Violência (Non-Violence) Project is an NGO whose goal is to develop and strengthen the non-violence culture by means of schools.

PNV has fostered actions of educational and preventive nature in schools of the public educational network in Curitiba since 1998 by mapping out the main events that generate violence in schools. As a result, it has been working on the solutions such as:

- Invest in the improvement of the relationship between students and teachers;
- Challenge the concepts related to traditional educational practices by searching for more efficient models;
- Prioritize the continued qualification of educators as multiplication agents;
- Strengthen attitudes that express values concerning respect and ethics by educators so that they can be examples and inspiration to their students.
- Cause the nonviolence education to be a school priority;
- Provide young people with the chance to be players in the process designed to promote a culture of peace.

The Project

The Project Tribos da Paz was created for children and teenagers to learn creative ways of playing nonviolent roles. NGO:
Associação de Agroturismo Acolhida na Colônia (Agritourism Association of Acolhida na Colônia)
Project:
Roda DÁgua (Wheel Water)

The Organization

The Acolhida na Colônia was founded in the state of Santa Catarina in 1999 as the fruit of a French Rural Sustainable Development project led by an organization called Accueil Paysan, which has been working to bolster the ecologic agritourism concept in France. The projects goal is to enable small farmers to host at their own homes small groups of tourists who will be provided with the chance to sample the rural lifestyle and culture – not the way as in hotels or inns – but really inside their homes and the rural context. The Acolhida na Colônia is part of the Accueil Paysan Network and has also incorporated the environment concern. For its contributions to the Goals 1, 3, 7 and 8, such organization has recently been granted with the Millennium Development Goals Award by the UN.

The Project

The project Roda dÁgua is focused on the production of environmentally sustainable renewable energy. The goal is based on old flourmills that used to be driven by water wheels centuries ago. Upon the emergence of the electrical power, water wheels can be connected to generators to produce electricity in properties that are not yet supplied with enough power. The power provision to rural areas is not fully effective. As a result, the demand has been growing especially now due to modern life conveniences such as freezers, refrigerators, and electrical showers. By using natural resources (rivers) and the local geography (Santa Rosa lies in the mountain region of the state of Santa Catarina), the project intends to: a) Renovate old water wheels in some properties of the Acolhida na Colônias members
b) Deploy the technology in other properties The water wheels, besides delivering electrical power in a clean, self-sustainable and renewable way, are educational and tourism attractions themselves.
Target Group
30 families and their properties in the "Acolhida na Colônia" circuit consisting of small farmers, who account for over 90% of the production units in the State.
Period on the site
From 12/11/2007 to 12/23/2009.

Observatório de Favelas do Rio de Janeiro (Observatory of Rio de Janeiro Shantytowns)
Project:
Escola Popular de Comunicação (Popular Communications School)

The Organization

The Observatório de Favelas’ fundamental strategy is the formulation, development, monitoring and assessment of social policies that can potentially be turned into public policies and then taken over by the government.

To meet such goal, the Observatório de Favelas has set three topics as the central axis for its work: Social Policies, Urban Violence and Human Rights. The topics are developed based on four branches: the qualification of social technicians in popular communities, the production of information about the urban space, the disclosure of the studies and experiences gained in popular spaces and the advisory services to local community groups, especially the preparation of social diagnoses and the implementation of life protection projects.

The Project

The project will create the foundation for the teenagers and young people from public schools in poor communities to help change the reality of their schools and communities. The Popular Communication’s School will qualify a group of 50 students living in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro by providing a module-structured course encompassing basic knowledge of communications, photographic, audiovisual and journalist designs.

NGO:
IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Institute of Ecological Researches)
Project:
Sementes Jovens (Young Seeds)

The Organization

IPÊ has been regarded as the third largest environmental NGO in Brazil. This institute, which started its activities with the Project Mico-Leão-Preto, currently relies on more than 90 professionals working on approximately 30 projects throughout the country.

Its integrated action model comprises research on endangered species, environmental education, restoration of habitats, the community commitment, as well as the sustainable development and engagement with public policies.

One of the goals pursued by IPÊ is the preservation of the biodiversity with respect for the traditions of the communities living in the surrounding areas that call for protection. The sustainable alternatives for the income generation are designed to create new sources of support to the region's families, thereby helping to ease the human pressure on the local biodiversity.

The Project

The results produced by the experience with an environmental preservation and education project led by IPÊ that integrated groups of young people from the region of the Pontal do Paranapanema have demonstrated meaningful impacts on such region’s social educational and environmental aspects.

The project is targeted at using the experience gained at the Pontal do Paranapanema with a new group of young people in the city of Nazaré Paulista. The region houses important heads of rivers flowing to the Sistema Cantareira, which supplies water to over 60% of the Great São Paulo.

Recent surveys conducted in the region of Nazaré Paulista have demonstrated the urgent need for interventions through actions intended to generate social environmental benefits and also to prompt public policies in line with the limitations of the social economic development imposed on the region due to the maintenance of the existing water reservoirs.

The project is targeted at the qualification of young people in activities that appreciate the nature and produce social benefits, thus contributing to the future community leaderships for the social environmental sustainability in a region where just over 14,000 inhabitants live in more than 20 rural districts that need to be continuously motivated to commit themselves to the search for environmentally adequate and socially fair alternatives.

Target Group
The region of Nazaré Paulista, besides its cultural richness, houses the heads of rivers that feed the Sistema Cantareira. Such region has also significant remaining portions of the Mata Atlântica - highly important thanks to its biodiversity and natural resources.

NGO:
Instituto Promundo (Pro-World Institute)
Project:
JovEMovimento - Engaging Young People in Violence Prevent Actions

The Organization

The Promundo has been working for 10 years to make the world a better place through the work with people, because that’s what the Organization believes in: we need to change the people to change the world. Based on such philosophy, the Instituto Promundo has designed programs in two frontlines: "Gender and Health" and "Violence Prevention".

Concerning Gender and Health, the Promundo conducts projects to promote debates on topics such as incentive to young women’s autonomy; questioning the traditional manhood standards among young men and the "costs" that such model imposes on themselves; men's engagement to put an end to the violence against women; promotion of the sexual diversity respect; reduction in homophobia and parents’ and adults’ awareness of the importance to promote egalitarian gender rules from the early childhood.

As for the Violence Prevention, the activities are focused on the elimination of physical punishments of children, skills for young people to commit to the monitoring of violence prevention policies - including the violence against women - and connections to strengthen community services and networks.

The Project

The Project JovEMovimento has been designed to prevent violence between and against young people through the awareness of their rights and duties, as well as the promotion of their participation in the monitoring and development of public policies to prevent violence and bolster the full enjoyment of healthy lives.

By holding workshops between poor young people and middle-class young people, the project helps minimize prejudice.

So as to meet such goals, the project will:

• Foster the political awareness and education among young people;
• Make them aware of their right to a life free from violence and their duties as citizens;
• Promote the young people’s participation and activism through the monitoring of the actions aimed at the prevention of violence as set forth in the National Policy for the Health Promotion (by the Ministry of Health), as well as the implementation of such actions in close dialogue with the authorities.

IDESAM - The Amazon’s Sustainable Development and Preservation Institute
Project:
Preservation and Tourism in the Reservation of Uatumã

The Organization

The State of Amazonas has 92 Preservation Units – 34 state, 33 federal and 25 city ones. There are communities and settlements in most Units. Accordingly, IDESAM was created three years ago to preserve the Amazonas biome and simultaneously help ensure appropriate life conditions to the communities living in the Preservation Units. In addition to coordinating courses and symposiums, IDESAM designs programs and policies on the climate changes, deforestation lessening, the Priority Action Development and Management Plan and the Bolsa Floresta (Forest Allowance) Program in partnership with the State Government, granting a R$50.00 allowance to each family living in and preserving the region.

The Project

The planning and deployment of a social-rural tourism model adjusted to Amazonia’s profile of agriculture and exploitation of natural resources by involving the communities of the Sustainable Development Reservation of Uatumã (RDS do Uatumã) as a strategy to generate income, improve their quality of life and the sustainable management of the Reservation. The project was created upon the request by the locals who had been damaged by the excessive traffic of fishing boats taking tourists to the region for recreational and sports fishing. With the project frameworking, the local community will be able to welcome tourists in a more structured way, as well as to control the exploitation of the natural resources and generate profits from the estimated tourist flow, thereby changing the current relationship between tourists and natives.

AMEFA - Minas Gerais’ Association of Agricultural Family Schools
Project:
Capacitação de Atores das EFAs de MG (Qualification of Minas Gerais’ EFAs’ players)

The Organization

The EFAs (Escolas Famílias Agrícolas – Agricultural Family Schools) were born in France with a distinct concept of rural education known as the Alternate Pedagogy intended to provide peasants’ children with the access to a formal yet rural environment-related education.

Introduced in Brazil in the 1960’s, such methodology has been successfully applied as students spend 15 days at school and 15 days at home applying what they have learned to their family farmings.

The AMEFA was created in 1993 to bolster the Agricultural Family Schools and ensure consistent quality and technical and methodological competence to every school.

The Project

Qualification of principals and facilitators of the 14 EFAs in the state of Minas Gerais, preferably those students from the Agricultural Family School and aware of their rural reality.
